European Union Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US against five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on figures that were at the heart of efforts to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the move.

The restrictions were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

This European legislation is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders argue the rules are essential to control hate speech and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and Europe.
