A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the pace and handling of the country's key public works projects.
The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a route built to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify what caused this tragedy,” declared the national leader.
The official confirmed that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The president stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those involved.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the immediate past president, whose presidency concluded the previous year. This project was a hallmark of his administration's economic goals for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to stimulate the economy of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Project Execution and Risks Apprehensions
The development of both rail lines was supervised by the nation's military, marking a notable increase of its responsibilities in civilian works. They were executed at an accelerated speed, beating predictions to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also raised significant apprehensions over operational security.
- Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an previous accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen two non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the tragedy, the head of a key rival party demanded an prompt halt in the development and management of all such projects.
This halt was suggested pending a thorough safety audit. The party stated that the loss of life "requires swift accountability."
In response, the head of state maintained that the train had been functioning in complete accordance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the development and management of these strategic initiatives.
