Super Typhoon Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Large-Scale Evacuations Reported

The Philippines was severely impacted by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, resulting in a minimum of two fatalities and displaced more than 1.4 million individuals.

Authorities stated that the massive storm caused extensive sudden floods, storm surges, landslides, and destructive gale-force winds, leading to the evacuation of millions of people nationwide.

Extensive Damage and Rescue Efforts

In Pandan, Catanduanes, a severely affected area, emergency crews recorded rising waters climbing to rooftop levels and homes washed out by the powerful currents.

Our team saved fourteen people stranded on the roof engulfed in flood in a flood-prone area,” a disaster-mitigation officer explained. “A father also called in panic, saying the roof of his house was about to be ripped off by the wind. We rescued him and four relatives.”

By Monday, authorities announced two fatalities: a drowning victim on the island and another killed after her home gave way in eastern Samar.

Storm Intensity and Projected Path

The intense storm was downgraded to a severe tropical storm early Monday as it crossed the Philippines’ largest island, where the capital is located.

According to the state weather service, its maximum winds dropped from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, though wind bursts were still reaching over 170 mph.

The storm system is projected to lose strength while heading north toward Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The country’s emergency management agency indicated efforts were ongoing to assess damage to infrastructure and homes.

Roughly thousands of shelters were activated to accommodate tens of thousands of households.

Recent Context and Environmental Factors

Fung-wong struck shortly following another severe storm, which killed hundreds of lives and left dozens unaccounted for prior to advancing toward Vietnam, where it killed five.

Searches for the missing persons had to be suspended on Sunday over risks to emergency personnel.

Global warming is making tropical storms more intense and common. Fung-wong is the 21st typhoon to hit the Philippines in 2025.

Scientists report that the rate of super-typhoons striking the islands has risen doubled in the past twenty years.

Global assessments suggest that intense storms result in an average of millions in dollars in losses for the Philippines every year.

The nation’s leader declared a state of emergency on Thursday because of the severe damage from Kalmaegi and the expected damage from the new storm.
